DELONGHI DINAMICA PLUS – NO MILK FLOW & STEAM VENTING DOWN THE DRAIN

I recently had two DeLonghi Machines with the same issue on the bench, so considered the issue worth highlighting. The steam valve had failed in both. In one, the steam was venting down the drain. Obviously the valve was not opening, no audible click and this 3 way valve defaults open to the drain. In the other, a different model, with a different layout, there was no steam or hot water. But again, it was a valve failure. The first valve had an open circuit on the coil. The second valve in the second machine suffered a failed plunger. So I’ll quickly go over diagnosing the issue and how it was resolved for those of you considering a similar scenario

This is the first 3 way valve in the Delonghi Dinamica, when it opens the steam is diverted through to the milk coupling, when its closed (not energised) steam flows down the black tube to the drain. And that’s what was happening.
When activating the milk button, I could not hear the steam valve opening. The multi meter clearly shows the logic board is switching voltage on to the coil, so its the valve at fault.
Sometimes it requires less hands to use a little clip on 230V lamp to test for voltages.
Or as some cowboys do, removed the coil and stick something metal inside the coil to determine if current is flowing. I am certainly not recommending doing this.
With the coil off and the voltmeter on ohms, we see we have absolutely no circuit. The coil is cooked despite looking absolutely normal.
By comparison a good 5w coil reliably reads 2.19 KOhms. Note Ive completely removed the coil away from live wires for testing.
The second valve passed all the electrical tests, so needed to be inspected internally.
Nothing blocking the valve jets and the plunger looks ok, but once replaced this valve functioned ok. The plungers or nucleus have a coil in them that creates the magnetic field when the coil is energised and this can go open circuit. Plungers also stick. So replacing a plunger often resolves a valve issue. You will probably replace the entire valve as you can’t just purchase a plunger. And the valve body may also be blocked.

  • Gernel alarm display show on my machine dinamica witch parts problum please reply

  • May i know, what part number is the valve? My dynamica plus suddenly stopped giving out milk/steam all else is ok. I also noticed that when descaling it’s not continuing and stuck “Please wait”.

I would appreciate it if you can provide more info on the valve to be changed.

    Thanks
